Alright now before I start off telling you what you should or shouldent do, keep in mind this is my opinion from a real life film and theatre perspective and if you disagree feel free to post here, or if you agree feel free to add to this! ok, now I will start, though this may be brief (cause its late, I may edit later):
There is one key pieces in any film that you have absolute control over that can make or break your film/machinima, with a couple of subsections;
The Script
your script controls so much of your machinima, it controls:
1. the setting
2. the characters
3. voice acting
4. blocking
5.THE STORY!
The Setting: the script controls the setting, the date, time of day, place and to an extent, the emotions of the characters, the environment, the available supplies (eg weapons). having a good and clear setting is key to having a fluid machinima that is consitent and draws viewers into the world, if the setting is unclear, make sure you have a reason for it, whether it will be cleared up in the future for story purposes or whatever.
The Characters: Obviously, the script controls the characters, there personalities, what they would say when, etc. If Story is the heart of the machinima, Characters are the brain (or a near equally important organ), making sure your characters personalities and reactions are consistent is a key part in making your machinima believable, if the character acts out of character without reason, your viewers 99% of the time will be outraged, always edit and re edit your scripts. also, Characters are a great transition into voice acting.
Voice Acting: Voice acting, is actually more a part of characters, making sure the voice acting is consistent in making sure you have believable characters and sometimes in having believable environments (see the selecting voice actors thread for more in depth voice acting analysis and stuff)
Blocking: Blocking, in theatre, is the act of deciding how characters physically react and move during certain lines and parts of certain scenes, making sure you have clear blocking in your script is essential for voice acting, and how characters react, example if there is a loud sound, deciding if the character moves towards it or not, or if the character is talking to someone, and then decides to back up for whatever reason, always make sure you have blocking is very important, especially for action based machinimas and ALL action sequences.
THE STORY!: obviously, the story is the heart of any film, play, or machinima, its what makes viewers want to watch more than 5 seconds of your machinima and makes them want more so much so that half your comments by the second day after posting is "WHERE IS EPISODE __!?!?" a good story can cover just about any problems, corniness, voice acting, cheesyness, lack of blocking, not great sets. A good story will cause viewers to overlook and ignore just about any minor - moderate (unless the story is incredible) flaws in your story and to defend your machinima against trolls. the story is without a doubt the most important part of the script, and therefore the machinima.
keep this stuff in mind when making your machinimas and hopefully your stuff will be 1000000000 times better than it would have been originally!
(sorry, Im bad at conclusions)
