Anybody who's up to date on Halo 4's mechanics know that the Elites are no longer playable (probably killing the chances for half the projects Halo machinimators had planned for the game), and the Flood are now in the new infection mode.
What do you think this means for Halo machinima? Are we gonna see the zombie infection plot replacing the alien invasion plot as the basis for 80% of machinimas out there? Could there be some creative potential? What do you guys think will come out of this?

There is no doubt that the Flood opens up potential for new Halo Machinimas. Such as a Dead Space themed film or something along the lines of The Thing. It even allows for interesting story arcs, like a Marine turning into a Mutant.
The problem here though, is that the Flood aren't general enough for many Halo Machinimas to even be utilized. All we get out of the Flood are just horror/survival/comedy machinimas, that's about as much use we can basically get out of them.
I have a strong feeling that we'll be seeing more Spartan Versus Spartan machinimas rather than Spartan Versus Flood machinimas. In a way, it looks like Spartans will be the new Elites.

I don't think that Flood machinimas will be nearly as popular as Human Covenant War machinimas. That is mainly because of how difficult it is to make anything in infection. We're also very limited since 343 didn't give us the option to get rid of forced colors. Flood mode might be good for some shorts, but definitely not for a whole series. I hope that they can change some of these issues in a TU.

Question: Would it even be possible to insert something as complex as playable elites in an update? DLC maps are one thing, but an entire new series of playable character models with armor, animation, and playability is beyond any update I've ever heard of.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to see it happen; an elite update would essentially redeem Halo 4 in my eyes. I just don't see it as likely, that's why I'm so pessimistic.
They could just copy-paste the elites from Reach and I would be more than satisfied. But they won't.

Awnser: it could be possible but it would take a while to get the models from Halo:reach, texture them, integrate them into the game's programming W/O destroying the existing game, beta testing the models, test out the animations, weapons, sounds, and finally shipping it.

As others have stated, the Flood character model is only able to facilitate a limited number of machinima facets. It is quite conceivable that we shall soon behold an advent of machinimas featuring protagonists being hunted by insipid abominations. Needless to say, this represents a cliched genre, that many are unable to employ in an original and engaging manner. In contrast, I believe that the Sangheili character model constituted an underutilised feature in many 'serious' machinima projects. Whereas the Flood may only be cast as antagonistic monsters, Sangheili characters can satisfy a myriad of enthralling roles.
Although I do not wish to cast undue dispersions upon the Flood, as I am confident that they shall be employed to great effect in some machinimas, one must lament that the storytelling possibilities associated with Sangheili have been negated in Halo 4.

See, I'm trying to make a machinima series based around the fact of the Flood form in the game. After seeing the negativity towards the playable Flood forms here I'm not too sure anyone would like to watch it? But whose to say it's bad until you watch it?
