I watched a machinima today and it was Just guys shooting other guys while "military speak" was being spoken... Am I the only one that just feels like they are watching a game being played and not like they are watching a movie?

Heyy! I have a good guess it was Rush. I watched it too. I liked it, but do you mean that feeling in a positive or negative way, or just an observation?

It's so generic and unoriginal to me. there's already videos like that one, why do we need another one like that? I miss when machinimas were just fun, it doesn't hurt to be serious sometimes, but I'd like it if they told an actual story... I don't mean to sound harsh

Most good machinima ideas get abandoned. That seemed like it could have been interesting. I was actually on hiatus for a while until just recently. I make a Halo reach machinima series called Drake. Have you seen it?

I used to like a machinima called Deus Ex Machina and that's what made me want to make machinima, but it REALLY sucks looking back; I can't deny the affect it had on me, though.
Have you seen that one?

Ohh yes. I saw Arby n' the Chief first from jon, I only watched Deus Ex a year or so later. I liked it too... its different thats for sure looking back at it now. (It was a bit like Spiderman there were lots of influences from there) Anyway I like jon's work even if now some of them aren't as good as when I saw them first. What made me want to do machinimas was Forgotten spartans. Thats the one that really got me, and its still good, it doesn't get worse by time. That was when I was 11, I turned 16 todayish (28th) and I really want start something now, I just need the a CC and off I go.
Also I started watching Drake. Its halarius, I like it a lot. By the time you read this I will have seen episode 7.

I've never seen Forgotten Spartans, but back on topic. I think that serious action machinimas with boring stories ruined machinima and caused its culture to collapse, and thats along side Machinima.com not actually producing machinima anymore.
Machinima is fading like a teenaged pop star. I think that it's gonna take a better understanding of the audience, the source material, and it's gonna take all of the machinima creators coming together and collaborating on one big channel to get it back. I doubt it will ever be as big, We should try though

yea we derailed a bit. I agree on what you think happened and the outcome. By that I mean, yeah machinima is fading, and that the directors will try something maybe? also, you're totaly right, Machinima.com didn' help either. But, I haven't seen THAT many mindless action machinimas, a few, yes, but not an alarming lot. I mean like Evan Royalty (ya know him), his first halo 4 machinima, was like that and the one after it... It might be because I mostly watch halo ones, and from that the earlier ones. For exemple I'm watching the last part of Chronicler177's Reach trilogy, never knew about it before. I discovered him looking at Arbiter617's friends on his chanel, and I thought i'd check him out. And to finish of my rambling. I do hope the creators will try to do something, but you are right it won't be as big as before, sadly.

Back in the days, namely the Halo 2 era, action heavy machinimas with no grasp of a storyline was the norm and was acceptable for it's time. In the past, machinima making was not popular and was uncommon to the public, finding body actors/voice actors was practically difficult. It's just that in today's standards where making machinimas is the norm, along with "professional gaming", It's something that everyone wants to do. So with that variable in mind, standards for Machinima is now extremely high.
The following Machinimas are now the standards for machinimas. -Star Wars: A Clone Apart -The Leet World -Red VS Blue -Rise of the Spartans -Theta Phase 1, 2, 3 -The Forgotten Spartans
In the end, we're living in the age where having tons of action scenes and guys spouting out generic lines with no context is just "meh". Our standards today are just high now.
And as of now, Machinimas doesn't seem to be doing well, but believe me it is. Many machinimas are underground but despite that, people are still making them. It's because Machinima has ALWAYS been a underground thing. Every now and then, it'll stick it's head out the surface and see the world, then slide right back in. A lot of people have passion for making machinimas, it's just that most of them are underground, or had not even uploaded yet.
I doubt many people have really seen the following machinimas before:
-Half Life Source: Gman Squad
-Garry's Mod: Dirty Garry -Garry's Mod: Dr. Strangeman
-Counter Strike 1.6: Deviation -Counter Strike Source Beta: Over the Counter Strike
-Day of Defeat Source: Soldiers of Misfortune -Day of Defeat Source: The Tank
-Call of Duty: Retaliation -Call of Duty: Retaliation: Redux
Don't let the viewer counts fool you on the ones hosted by Machinima, all these videos accumulated those views throughout the years while others made the same amount in a matter of months(without being hosted by Machinima.com).

I was a big fan of Xanatos and his Gmod machinimas, and I still go back and watch Gman Squad and Soldiers of Misfortune. New machinimas do have bar set for them, but it does make us strive to be better at what we make. Leet World and RvB are shining examples of how it's done and we have to do our best to follow they're example. Don't rehash the old and let's evolve, we need to learn that machinima is like a cartoon and that it should not take it self too seriously. Machinimas are suppose to be fun, even if it has a serious plot it has to remind itself that it's a machinima. Leet World's Characters wouldn't be likable if they didnt have comedic moments and when they were thrown into a serious situation you gave a poop about them. Character development and jokes, then drama. There isn't one character I don't remember from Leet World, but in recent machinimas I can't even remember the main character's name.
Stop with the generic and already done plots, comedy is crucial, and Action isn't good without already developed Characters. Look at how all of the successful machinima's first episode, they don't start with generic characters and action, they start with a idea that's explained and then they introduce the characters and they're quirks. Flaws and out standing characteristics are what make people relatable and likable. Every character in Leet Worl had a flaw or a very distinguished characteristic.
My point is that machinima nowa days don't even compare to the old ones. I've seen some very well shot machinimas that have everything technical down, but the characters and how they're introduced needs some work and straight up action will not hold my or nearly anyone else's attention.
I'm using my IPhone to type, excuse me if there is any thing wrong with my grammar or if I repeat myself.
